The major new feature expected to be revealed on the iPhone 5S next week is a fingerprint scanner. It’s not the kind of part you’ll be able to see much of when integrated into the phone, but as with everything iPhone related, the actual sensor and new Home button components have leaked ahead of the launch.SonnyDickson has yet again got his hands on the iPhone 5S part and managed to capture some high resolution shots of it. As you can see, the circular Home button and fingerprint scanner sit at the end of a flex cable. It constitutes a very different design over the iPhone 5 Home button construction with good reason, but should give you some idea of how close the scanner will sit to the Home button in the final handset design. What we don’t know yet is whether the scanner will require a break in the casing to function or if Apple has managed to figure out a way to enclose it completely under the casing. I’m sure that would be preferable to maintain the clean design of the smartphone. The question now is, will other smartphone manufacturers copy Apple and add their own fingerprint scanners to Android and Windows Phone handsets? If they do, Apple will surely kick off a few more lawsuits, but at the same time I hope they do as it should make smartphones all the more secure for everyone.
