Meyer has responded to the speculation in an interview with the Columbus Dispatch. With speculation about USC coach Clay Helton’s job security already rampant, Leinart and Bush have already spoken of trying to persuade Meyer to take over if Helton is fired.Did Meyer have any interest in nipping that in the bud or in opening the crack to the door?“I learned my lesson long ago,” he said. “All I’m going to say is I believe I’m done (coaching). I think I’m done.”That’s a fair response, but it’s not one that’ll completely eliminate any speculation about the job.He does appear to be quite happy in retirement, though.“I am good with it,” Meyer told The Dispatch, “but it’s still a process.”Will that process eventually include a return to the sideline? We’ll find out. PASADENA, CA – JANUARY 01: Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer speaks to the media after the Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual at the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2019 in Pasadena, California. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)Urban Meyer is several months into his first year as a retired college football coach, and the former Ohio State head coach plans on staying retired, but that’s not stopping anyone from speculating about a potential return to the sport. The three-time national title-winning head coach will be doing a pregame show for FOX Sports 1 with Reggie Bush and Matt Lienart this fall.Of course, that’s led to speculation about Meyer taking the USC job in 2020, assuming Clay Helton has another disappointing season.“We’ll definitely be recruiting him,” Bush told the LA Times. “What makes you think we won’t be recruiters? Nothing is off the table.” read more
QUEBEC – A political commentator who joked that he’d rather hunt Quebec separatists than squirrels has been taken off the air after police received a complaint against him, a television network said Wednesday.Groupe TVA said it was suspending Luc Lavoie from its programs while Quebec provincial police look into the matter.“The management of TVA Nouvelles/LCN has just been informed by the Surete du Quebec that a complaint has been filed and an investigation is ongoing into comments made yesterday by analyst Luc Lavoie concerning separatists on the show ‘La Joute,’” the network said in a statement.“Under the circumstances, the management took the decision to pull Luc Lavoie from the air until the conclusion of this investigation.”A provincial police spokesman confirmed that several citizens had contacted police following the broadcast.Sgt. Stephane Tremblay said investigators were analyzing the statements to see if a criminal infraction had taken place.Lavoie, a former spokesman for ex-prime minister Brian Mulroney, made the remark while on the air Tuesday discussing petitions for and against the legalization of squirrel hunting tabled at the provincial legislature.“We could take our guns like Americans, and shoot at squirrels … actually, I would have liked to be able to hunt the separatists, but it looks like it’s not possible,” he said with a chuckle on a French-language current affairs show. The remarks caused an uproar on social media, prompting Lavoie to apologize later Tuesday evening for what he called “stupid” remarks.Earlier Wednesday, TVA released an initial statement saying it considered Lavoie’s comments unacceptable but didn’t immediately announce any further action, given Lavoie had already apologized.Parti Quebecois Leader Jean-Francois Lisee was among those who called on TVA to go further and sanction the commentator, claiming Lavoie would have been taken off the air had he made similar statements about religious minorities or people with disabilities.“If in his sentence he’d replaced the world ‘separatists’ with ‘Muslims,’ ‘Blacks,’ ‘women,’ ‘handicapped,’ ‘Jews,’ he wouldn’t be on the air, it would be terrible,” Lisee said Wednesday morning. The French language television network is owned by Lisee’s predecessor as Parti Quebecois leader, Pierre Karl Peladeau. The controversy erupted hours after the tabling of petitions for and against the legalization of squirrel hunting in Quebec.A Quebec student started a petition in June to ask the provincial government to add squirrels to its list of game animals.Martin Poirier argued that squirrels are edible and numerous, that they’re legal to hunt in many other provinces, and that hunting is economically beneficial to the province.Coalition for Quebec’s Future member Mathieu Lemay appeared to be struggling not to laugh as he tabled the petition on behalf of its 1,270 signatories.“We, the undersigned, ask the Quebec government to modify the regulations regarding hunting in the goal of legalizing squirrel hunting on the Quebec territory,” he read, as scattered laughter could be heard around him.Sylvain Roy of the Parti Quebecois tabled a second squirrel-related petition that had been started by opponents of Poirier’s plan. That petition, which was signed by 1,690 people, noted that animals are considered “sentient beings” under Quebec law and that shooting them could cause them to suffer.— with files from Morgan Lowrie in Montreal read more

Sculpture students help remove the crib surrounding the Concordia sculpture after it was moved from just east of the Schmon Tower to the new garden in front of the Cairns Complex. A longtime fixture on the Brock campus has a new home.Concordia, the bronze sculpture that stood in a greenspace just east of the front of the Schmon Tower, was moved Monday to a perch in the new garden outside the Cairns Complex. The one-ton sculpture was created by Canadian artist Elza Mayhew and has been on the Brock campus since 1968, after being on display at Expo ’67 in Montreal. Its new location is a more prominent one, surrounded by benches and located on the main pathway through campus.Students from sculpture class observed the move. They were also given a lesson in a how a one-ton piece of metal is formed by an artist and becomes a work of art. read more
DURHAM, N.C. — Duke’s star-studded freshmen are facing another first, one not many expected this soon — if ever — during their presumably short college careers.Bouncing back from a loss. The title game at the Maui Invitational might have provided a reality check for anyone expecting the Blue Devils to coast to an undefeated — if not unchallenged —season behind one of the best freshman classes in years. Now they’re ready to show what lessons they learned from their first defeat, starting Tuesday night against Indiana in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.“No one wants to lose, but I definitely think to lose that game was a great learning experience for us,” guard RJ Barrett said. “Coach (Mike Krzyzewski) said none of his teams went undefeated — he’s lost with every team. So it’s just something that happens in basketball, and we’ve just got to learn and move on from it.”This latest group of young Blue Devils (5-1) drew comparisons to some of the greatest freshman classes in the sport’s history — including Michigan’s famed “Fab Five” in the 1990s — after blowing out then-No. 2 Kentucky to climb to No. 1, routing a couple of outmanned mid-majors at home, then winning two games in Maui during a 5-0 start. But a loss to Gonzaga — which propelled the Bulldogs to the top spot in the AP Top 25 and dropped Duke to No. 3 — took care of that undefeated talk and showed why it might be wise to pump the brakes on the hype train.“We’re trying to learn, go through a different experience every day,” Barrett said.ESPN analyst and former college coach Fran Fraschilla believes these Blue Devils have “a chance to be as good as the Kentucky classes in ’09 and ’11” but pointed out that few one-and-done-dominated teams have won the NCAA Tournament. And as impressive as they’ve been to start their college careers, how they’ll fit at the next level remains an inexact science.“We all expect that these three Duke freshmen are going to have a major impact on this season,” Fraschilla said. “But the jury is still out on pro potential because a lot of the things being said about these guys were being said about Justise Winslow and Jahlil Okafor, and their college success hasn’t necessarily translated the way many expected in the NBA.”Utah Jazz rookie Grayson Allen has a unique perspective. He was part of Duke’s recruiting class in 2014-15 led by eventual one-and-dones Okafor, Winslow and Tyus Jones and won the national title. When they left, he stuck around, and his other three Duke teams were stacked with one-year players that didn’t advance quite as far in the NCAA Tournament.“You hear people saying undefeated, they can’t be stopped — they have to do as best they can to ignore that and keep improving,” Allen said. “If there’s anything I learned from four years of college basketball, the tournament and college basketball does not care who’s good in November or December. All (that matters) is March and that first week of April. It’s very unforgiving.“So, they have to make sure they keep improving throughout the year and keep their egos in a good spot. I don’t think any of them have bad egos, but you can hear all of these different things about draft projections, you need to do this, you need to do that, and you can get outside of yourself a little bit. If they just stay focused and listen to coach, they’ll be good.”Krzyzewski has figured out how to handle one-and-done players, cycling 14 of them through his program since Kyrie Irving started the run in 2011. Four were around last year: Marvin Bagley III, Wendell Carter Jr., Gary Trent Jr. and Trevon Duval.“Don’t play for things that the outside wants you to play for,” Krzyzewski said of the current group. “Play for what you want to play for and that’s fun, getting better. They really like each other, they love each other, and they play so hard.”Allen said he got a taste of that during the summer. He worked out at Duke and played pick-up games with them, saying Zion Williamson “is easy to play with, he’s easy to play off of” and point guard Tre Jones — the younger brother of Allen’s classmate — “is a lot like Tyus, and that’s a compliment.”But the comparisons end there, he said. One key difference: His freshman class could lean on veterans Quinn Cook and Amile Jefferson for advice and support. With only one non-freshman averaging more than 20 minutes, that’s not a luxury the current Blue Devils have.“That’s the one area, if you could pick a weakness for (this current Duke team), it’s experience,” Allen said. “They’re going to have to have guys step up and provide leadership. That (leadership) could come from the freshman, or it could come from the juniors and other guys.”If not, the Hoosiers are capable of hanging the second loss on the young Blue Devils.___AP Sports Writer Michael Marot in Indianapolis contributed to this report.___More AP college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/AP_Top25Joedy McCreary, The Associated Press read more
Show more The Cabinet Office has previously said it would look into the issue of courtesy titles.Appearing at the Harper’s Bazaar Summit in London, Lady Shackleton referred to Millicent Fawcett, the Suffragist, who was infuriated when her purse was stolen at Waterloo station but the contents were recorded by the authorities as “the property of Henry Fawcett” because women could not control their own finances.Society “hasn’t actually moved very much further”, Lady Shackleton said. Fawcett’s husband had died by the time she was made a Dame in 1925 but “she would have been unable to make him Sir Henry Fawcett in the way that he would have been able to make her Lady Fawcett had he been knighted”.Addressing other inequalities in society, Lady Shackleton called for reform of the tax system to cover childcare.”If it is OK to make your secretary tax deductible, why is not okay to deduct your nanny?” she asked.”If you’re high enough up the hierarchy to employ good childcare, then you can carry on working effectively. But too many people are stuck in this terrible dilemma of how they actually care for their children when their pay doesn’t make it worthwhile.”She also pointed to double standards in the workplace. “Women are always, whenever they negotiate, considered to be pushy. When do you ever hear a man being ‘pushy’? Actually, all you’re asking for is to be respected and paid properly.” Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp? The peerage system is sexist because husbands of baronesses are still referred to as ‘Mr’, according to one of Britain’s leading divorce lawyers. While the wife of a male peer is known as ‘Lady’, husbands of female peers are not awarded courtesy titles. It is an enduring symbol of inequality, according to Baroness Shackleton of Belgravia.”Historically, we have been the chattels of men. We think that that has ended but there’s one lacuna, which my husband will kill me for mentioning but I’m going to mention,” said Lady Shackleton, who was made a life peer in 2010 and sits on the Conservative benches in the House of Lords. As a man, she said: “If you are elevated either to the head of the police force, the head of the judiciary, a High Court judge, a top civil servant, you are given either a peerage or a knighthood and your wife is entitled to a courtesy title as a consequence of your elevation.”Us women are unable, because we’re chattels of our husbands, to confer that title the other way, so all our husbands are ‘Mr’. It’s the same for civil partners.”If there’s a logic that the person who accompanies you on your journey to success is entitled to some recognition, it’s equally important – in fact more important – the other way, to recognise the contribution of your partner.”That you aren’t able to transfer it if you’re a woman is illogical in today’s day and age.”Lady Shackleton is married to Ian Shackleton, who works in financial public relations. She is solicitor to the Duke of Sussex and Duke of Cambridge, and represented the Prince of Wales and Sir Paul McCartney in their divorces – memorably emerging from the High Court with wet hair after having a carafe of water tipped over her head by Sir Paul’s estranged wife, Heather Mills. read more
Today 22 January 2018 marks one year since the ousted president left the shores of The Gambia. The 21 January 2017 was the decisive day. President Barrow was still in Dakar. The ousted president was still in the state house. There were no ECOMIG forces controlling the airport of Banjul. Security was still in the hands of the Gambian Security forces. Supporters of the Coalition and those of the ousted president walked freely whilst the ousted president escorted by security forces headed to the airport controlled by Gambian security forces, to get in a plane and flew outside of the Gambia to a destination only he and his associates knew at the time.Never in the history of the country has it been so gripped by uncertainty. Despite this uncertainty tolerance of diversity remained in both the armed forces and civil society. The Coalition had support within the security forces and civilians. The same goes to the ousted president. However, they suppressed their emotions subjected themselves to the rule of law. Thus allowing peace to prevail despite the diversity of opinions. That is how democracy must work. The current government should know that like the previous government, supporters and opponents must exist among the security forces and civilians. Hence the best instrument for maintaining peace is to promote diversity and maintain social justice. read more
