The first rig in the series has just been delivered.”It’s been an exciting assignment to work on. Via a comprehensive development co-operation with Maersk Drilling, KeppelFELS and DNV, we’ve set new standards for safety levels and reliability on this project. We can now document an uptime for the system of over 99.98%, and we look forward to carrying forward all of the experiences we’ve gained here onto the next XLE project,” said Esben Juul Sørensen, CEO at Xervo.Maersk Drilling also chose Xervo as a supplier on the Maersk Innovator rig, which operates in the Norwegian part of the North Sea.The rig, which is leased by ConocoPhillips, needs to replace its lifeboat systems in order to meet the new, stricter regulations, and the changes will have to be made while the rig is operational. Tony Mokbel’s accomplices who engineered his escape to Greece have failed in a bid to reduce their jail sentences. The Victorian Court of Appeal this week ruled the eight-year sentences handed to Bassillios Pantazis, and brothers George Elias and Chafic Issa was not excessive for the crimes they committed in assisting Mokbel evade justice. “This was an egregious example of perverting the course of justice of a kind that had not been witnessed before,” said Supreme Court Chief Justice Marilyn Warren. “The level, and sustained nature, of the offending warranted the very substantial sentence that was imposed.” Pantazis bought the yacht which took Mokbel to Greece after he skipped bail during his trial for importing cocaine. Pantazis then hired Greek sailors to refit the boat and sail it from Fremantle. He also drove Mokbel from Victoria to Western Australia, taking along his wife’s sister, his step-daughter and her seven-month baby to create the illusion of a family holiday. “Pantazis was part of a highly sophisticated and systematic attempt to pervert the course of justice by assisting Mokbel to flee the jurisdiction and permanently evade the process of law,” the Court of Appeal judges said. George Elias and Chafic Issa provided the Bonnie Doon property where Mokbel hid for three months before fleeing Australia. Elias had argued that he only helped in the operation to return a favour which Mokbel had done for his brother, but the appeal court found that this did not provide sufficient explanation for his extensive involvement in Mokbel’s trip across Australia and the preparation for the journey to Greece. Mokbel was sentenced last month to 30 years in jail with a minimum term of 22 years for drug trafficking. Three of Mokbel’s other associates – Mitat Rasimi, David Tricarico and Wayne Finn – also lost appeals against their sentences for trafficking and possessing drugs. Look at it, hold it close, ponder its existence, and see if you get a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. If so, fold it neatly (Kondo can teach you how) and put it away. If not, thank it for its service, then place it gently in a pile to donate or discard.Similarly, take a moment to look through The Muppets’ latest tweets, determine their importance to your daily life, and keep or unfollow.“I’ve been working on this tool for three weeks and I still haven’t finished KonMari-ing my 1,000 initial follow” list, down to about 600 early this week, Tarng admitted.Yes, you can scroll through the Twitter app to do the same thing. During its meeting Tuesday, the Anchorage Assembly took a step toward handling future elections by mail.A unanimous vote green-lighted the municipal clerk’s office to increase education and outreach on switching over to mail-in elections. The idea is for local elections to be handled in a more flexible mail-in manner starting in April of 2017.Assembly elections committee chairman Ernie Hall said the city has the abilities to adjust to a vote-by-mail model once an official ordinance eventually comes before the Assembly.“We believe that we can do this pretty flawlessly,” Hall said. The decision wouldn’t affect national or state elections in November, but instead the April votes that decide bonds, referendums — as well as Assembly and mayoral races. Rather than running to one of the 122 polling stations across the municipality, voters would have the option of mailing ballots in, dropping them off in advance, or stopping by a handful polling centers open on voting day.Voter turnout in Anchorage is traditionally low during spring elections. May’s mayoral run-off was a high for Anchorage, drawing nearly 30 percent of eligible voters to the polls. read more

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown. (AP Photo)With less than a week before the June 24 primary elections, polls from two different news agencies show Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown with a commanding lead over his two principal opponents, Attorney General Doug Gansler and Delegate Heather Mizeur. As the final day approaches a significant percentage of voters remain apathetic, registering no opinion regarding the candidate they support.Among likely voters, a Washington Post poll published June 10 found that 46 percent would vote for Brown were the election held that day (the poll was conducted from June 5-8). Gansler trailed behind, garnering only 23 percent of likely voters polled. Mizeur came in third, with 16 percent. The poll also found that four percent of voters did not intend to vote for any of the three leading candidates, while 12 percent had formed no opinion between the three. Brown’s 23 percent lead over the second place Gansler dwarfs the combined 16 percent of those who have so far not committed to any of the candidates, suggesting Brown’s lead is safe.A poll conducted by the Baltimore Sun from May 31 to June 3, found that Brown had a 21 point edge over Gansler, with Brown receiving 41 percent of likely voters to Gansler’s 20.On June 11, the Washington Post published the result of their poll on the Attorney General’s race in Maryland. Delegate Jon Cardin led Sen. Brian Frosh, 26 percent to 20, while Aisha Braveboy had 13 percent support. That poll also found, however, that 31 percent of likely voters had formed no opinion on any of the three leading candidates, meaning that this race is still very much up for grabs, and could easily be shifted by one of the campaigns with an effective get-out-the-vote operation.Early Voting Maryland. (AP Photo)An additional 9 percent of likely voters polled said they would not vote for any of the three. As of 2 p.m. on the fifth day of early voting (June 16), 4,965 votes had been cast so far in Baltimore City in the 2014 primary election according to Hanan Fleming, anadministrative assistant with the Baltimore City Board of Elections. Because votes are not counted until after the primary on June 24, no data is available regarding the division of those votes among the candidates. In the 2010 primary, a total six days of early voting yielded 7,244 votes in Baltimore City, according to data available on the Baltimore City Board of Elections website. The 2012 primary, held during a presidential election year, saw a similar if slightly higher 7,508 early votes cast in Baltimore City over the six day early voting period.Based on the figures available so far, Baltimore City will need over 2,000 votes on the sixth and final day of early voting to match either of the previous two totals. The 2010 and 2012 primary elections saw 1,640 and 1,656 early votes tallied on the sixth and final day of early voting respectively, suggesting this year’s numbers are off the pace of the previous two primary elections. In the Republican primary for governor, the same Baltimore Sun poll that had Brown ahead by 21 points found that candidate Larry Hogan leads with 27 percent of likely voters backing him, while his two nearest opponents, David Craig and Charles Lollar, trail behind with 12 percent each. A full 37 percent of likely voters said they were undecided as to any of the Republican firstname.lastname@example.org. read more

Citation: New calculations show Earth’s core is much younger than thought (2016, May 26) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2016-05-earth-core-younger-thought.html A trio of researchers in Denmark has calculated the relative ages of the surface of the Earth versus its core and has found that the core is 2.5 years younger than the crust. In a paper published in the European Journal of Physics, U I Uggerhøj and R E Mikkelsen with Aarhus University and J Faye with the University of Copenhagen, describe the math involved in their effort and their results. During one of his famous lectures at Caltech in the 1960’s, Richard Feynman remarked that due to time dilation, the Earth’s core is actually younger than its crust—a difference he suggested that was likely a “day or two.” Since that time, physicists have accepted both the notion that the core is younger than the surface, and the amount of time given by Feynman, without checking the math.General relativity suggests that really big objects, like planets and stars, actually warp the fabric of spacetime, which results in a gravitational pull capable of slowing down time. Thus, an object closer to Earth’s center would feel a stronger pull—a clock set near the core would run slower than one placed at the surface, which means that the material that makes up the core is actually younger than the material that makes up the crust. This seems counterintuitive to our sense of reason. Such oddities have long been taken for granted in physics, as has the degree of time difference offered by Feynman during his lecture. In this new effort, the research trio ran the math to discover the actual number involved. They found that over the course of our planet’s 4.5 billion year history, the pull of gravity causes the core to be approximately 2.5 years younger than the crust—ignoring geological processes, of course. The findings by the team not only serve as an example of the influence of gravity over time, but the problems that can arise when scientists take the words of famous colleagues at face value, simply because of their prestige. No one should be above review, of course, which, as many who knew Feynman can attest, was one of his mantras. Famous Feynman lectures put online with free access read more
