Advertisement AdvertisementFollowing her attacks on Ronda Rousey this past Monday Night on RAW, Nikki Bella is back in the spotlight but this time off camera. The former two-time Divas Champion has slammed latest accusations that her break up with ex-fiance John Cena was fake and she did it for TV ratings.Nikki and Cena ended their relationship earlier this year in April 2018. The couple had been together for six years and were engaged to be married before the duo decided to officially part ways.Nikki responded to the ongoing rumours and said that she had been deeply hurt by these claims and felt like the critics were “literally just knifing it and just churning it”. In her defence, the 34 year old justified that she wasn’t prepared to sacrifice her career and ambitions for a relationship that required one of them to stop working.During her time away from WWE, Bella has had a very prosperous stint as an entrepreneur along with her sister, Brie as the Twins have successfully built up their business and Women’s clothing brand, Birdiebee. After dropping their friendship with Ronda Rousey last week, the next stop for the Bella Twins is the first ever all women’s PPV, WWE Evolution. Nikki has landed a one-on-one title opportunity against Rousey for the RAW Women’s Championship at the Nassau Coliseum on October 28 in Uniondale, NY. read more
Novak Djokovic is all set to make his comeback to the tennis court at the World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi after spending almost five months on the sidelines due to an elbow injury.Djokovic pulled out midway during his quarter-final match against Tomas Berdych at the Wimbledon. The former world No.1 has not played competitively since and underwent surgery.”It’s been a real roller-coaster ride for me for a year and a half with this issue,” world number 12 Djokovic told Sport360 in an interview.”I’ve never had surgery in my life, I’ve never had any major injuries that kept me away from the tour for such a long time… I’ve learned a lesson because I really want to avoid getting to that stage of an injury ever in my career after this,” the Serb added.Djokovic further said he is eager to return to the court.”I can’t wait to get back on the competition level but it was a great experience for me to have. And it was a somewhat necessary experience because I got maybe too comfortable with not having major injuries,” he said.Meanwhile, Andy Murray is also relishing his return to competition after serious injury cut his last campaign short, but the overriding aim for him in the New Year is to stay fit and healthy.Murray, who has struggled with a persistent hip injury since the Briton’s quarter-final exit at Wimbledon in July, pulled out of the U.S. Open and dropped to 16th in the world rankings.advertisementThe 30-year-old is scheduled to participate in the Brisbane International which starts on December 31 as he gears up for the Australian Open, but a season blighted by injury has changed the double Wimbledon champion’s outlook.”When I was fit and healthy last year (2016), you think about winning all the major events, getting to number one and winning every competition that you are in and that is what drives you,” Murray told Sky Sports.”When you miss four or five months and there has been a bit of uncertainty about my hip (that changes). The goals change and I remember now how much I loved playing tennis — it isn’t about winning every match I play in the future or winning more slams.”I want to get back to playing tennis, I want to be fit and healthy and that is what is driving me just now… I was pretty unhealthy for most of this year and I am getting there but it is a slow process.”(Courtesy: Reuters) read more

Lambert said that the EU Parliament welcomed the UNHRC resolution last year on Sri Lanka, and would hope that progress has been made since its adoption. “It is promising to note that there has not been an outbreak of conflict since the end of the war in 2009. We have seen some of the infrastructure investment made by the Government in the former conflict zones and have also discussed issues of job creation and social investment, which are positive steps forward and to be welcomed,” she said. However, she said many unsettled issues remain such as the inclusion of the Tamil population in post-war reconstruction efforts, and implementation of the recommendations contained in the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission Report. Commenting on the recent report released by the army on the final stages of the war, Lambert said that the EU Parliament has not specifically discussed the report from the Sri Lankan Army but she took note that one of the conclusions is that the police should remain under the control of the Ministry of Defence.“In our discussions with the Sri Lankan authorities we have been keen to ensure that the police are seen as a civilian force in order to develop a position of greater trust with the population,” she said.Lambert said the European Parliament would like to encourage the Sri Lankan authorities to work together with the UN Human Rights Office. Recently the European Parliament passed a resolution on the upcoming UN Human Rights Council, re-emphasising the need for accountability and reconciliation in Sri Lanka. “We are hoping to welcome a Sri Lankan Parliamentary delegation to Brussels later this year, and see this as a good opportunity to hold more in-depth discussions on the overall situation in Sri Lanka,” she said. The European Union (EU) wants an independent investigation and evaluation into the final years of the war in Sri Lanka, in addition to the national enquiries.Jean Lambert, Chair of the European Parliament Delegation to South Asia, told The Sunday Leader that the EU remains concerned about reports of threats and attacks on human rights defenders and journalists in Sri Lanka, and encourages authorities to hold those responsible accountable. read more

The 13,426 acres is scattered throughout the Haines Borough. (Map Courtesy of the University of Alaska)The University of Alaska Board of Regents is delaying a decision on whether to approve the plan for a Chilkat Valley timber sale.Listen nowThe board was set to approve the development and disposal plan for a major Haines-area timber project at a meeting Thursday. Instead, regents voted to defer consideration until a special meeting later this month. The decision comes amid concerns from regents and the public, and a desire for more time to work through those questions.UA announced the negotiated sale in March. It’s aiming to harvest 150 million board feet from 13,000 acres, over a 10-year period. The area identified for potential harvest is scattered throughout the Haines Borough. At a Facilities and Land Management Committee Meeting earlier this month, Regent Jo Heckman questioned the amount of information available for the board.“When you say, the brevity of the document is because that is how it’s defined in our policy? Are we real proud of that policy?” Heckman asked. “I’m just trying to understand, I know you’re justifying it the best way that you have. That here is the information and here is how we’re providing the information. But flip it on the other side and put yourself in our shoes, when we’re not getting what we think we should be getting.”The University has said more information won’t be available until further along in the negotiation process. At the special meeting, regents will receive a presentation from the university, with a summary of public comments, more details about the plan, and a set of guiding principles for the project. That meeting is scheduled for June 19. read more

Tourists look at souvenirs with Macedonian flag on at the Old Bazar in Skopje, Macedonia on 29 September. Photo: ReutersMacedonians will vote Sunday on whether to re-name their country North Macedonia in a bid to settle a long-running row with Greece and unlock its path to NATO and EU membership.Macedonia has struggled for recognition of its name since its birth in 1991 when the landlocked country declared independence from Yugoslavia.Athens protested immediately, accusing Skopje of stealing the name of its own northern province also called Macedonia. The dispute stretches back nearly three decades, with both countries claiming links to Alexander the Great’s ancient empire of Macedon, which spanned the territories.A grandiose “antiquisation” project under Macedonia’s former government that plastered Skopje with neo-classical facades and statues of Alexander the Great added fuel to the fire. But in June Macedonia’s new premier Zoran Zaev and his Greek counterpart Alexis Tsipras reached a landmark compromise under which Greece would drop its objections to Macedonia joining the EU and NATO in return for the name change. On Sunday, the nation will vote to accept or reject the deal with polls opening at 0500 GMT.Some feel it is embarrassing to change their name at the request of another country. But a desire anchor their future to the West—and the economic prosperity that could bring—is a powerful motivation to accept the deal in one of Europe’s poorest countries.“We cannot really say it is fair, but the EU and NATO matter more for all of us, so let’s move forward,” 28-year-old Abedin Memeti said ahead of the vote.BoycottThe referendum is not binding, but a ‘yes’ majority would give parliament a political mandate to change the constitution. If the deal is passed through the referendum and is ratified by two-thirds of MPs, the Greek parliament will be called on to give the final stamp of approval. While the Macedonian government plans to call any significant majority in favour of the deal a success, the right-wing opposition may question the vote’s credibility if turnout is below 50 per cent. Some critics of the name deal have been calling for a boycott, including President Gjorge Ivanov, who is allied with the nationalist opposition.Massive emigration in recent decades could also affect the numbers, with nearly a quarter of the 2.1 million population estimated to live abroad.Less than 3,000 of those overseas have signed up to vote.Western Balkans footholdEurope and the US have campaigned hard for the deal, with many leaders passing through Skopje to urge Macedonians to accept the “historic” opportunity.NATO has already issued an invite—on hold until the deal passes—while EU accession talks are scheduled to begin next year. The West is keen to have another foothold in the Western Balkans, a region where Russia, which is opposed to NATO expansion, has historically had influence. At home, those in favour of the deal say a desire for an EU future is helping bind ethnic Macedonians with the Albanian minority, who are broadly pro-West.While Macedonia avoided the full-scale inter-ethnic wars that rippled across the region during the collapse of Yugoslavia, it was roiled by an Albanian insurgency in 2001 that left more than 100 dead.A peace deal was reached later that year granting Albanians more political rights, but tensions have remained.“This is the first time I am seeing Macedonians and Albanians campaigning together for common goals,” Besa Arifi, a law professor, told AFP.“This will give us more opportunities to unite all citizens around shared values,” he added. read more

Hollywood actor Angelina Jolie’s admission that she had the BRCA gene – linked to high risk of breast cancer – may have encouraged women to get tested, according to a study which found that there was an 80-fold increase in genetic testing between 2003 to 2014. Researchers from University of Georgia also noted that there was a big spike in 2013, the year in which Jolie revealed she carries a mutation.A breast cancer (BRCA) gene test is a blood test to check for mutations in genes called BRCA1 and BRCA2. This test predict the risk of getting breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Also Read – Add new books to your shelf”BRCA testing and counselling provide important information on the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers among women with family history of the cancers,” said Zhuo Adam Chen, an associate professor at University of Georgia.”Appropriate use of BRCA testing would lead to reduction in avoidable cancer mortalities and morbidities,” Chen said. Women with hereditary BRCA gene mutations have a 45 to 65 per cent risk of developing breast cancer before age 70, compared to seven per cent in the general population, according to the US National Cancer Institute. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveThe study, published in the journal Genetics in Medicine analysed testing rates, payment to the provider, and out-of- pocket costs for patients from 2003 to 2014, and compared findings to reported revenue from Myriad Genetics, the only provider of the test until 2013. Researchers noted that overall, BRCA testing increased 80-fold during those 11 years, with a large spike in testing occurring in 2013.That same year Hollywood actor Angelina Jolie published an op-ed in The New York Times promoting BRCA gene testing and the Supreme Court struck down the patent on BRCA gene testing, researchers said. “This could provide insights on the impact of the policy changes and the media coverage of celebrity endorsement,” said Chen.Though it may be tempting to connect the whirlwind of media coverage surrounding Jolie’s decision to have a double mastectomy following a positive BRCA test, the available data cannot point to which event had a greater impact, researchers said.”Jolie’s op-ed, the Supreme Court decision on BRCA gene and the USPSTF recommendation occurred in a very compact timeline,” Chen said.”In a companion study, we did examine whether women had follow-up surgical procedures and found an urban and rural disparity in the follow-up rates,” said Chen.”Women residing in urban areas consistently had higher rates of follow-up surgical procedures than those in rural areas, though the gap is narrowing,” Chen added. read more
