first_img[Photo: Dave Vann] STS9 just released a brand new single called “Real & Imagined” to the public yesterday for fans to enjoy. The song was originally recorded at some point during the group’s Artifact sessions, a period of time between 2001 and 2004 that eventually bore STS9’s atmospheric 2005 album. As noted in the notes accompanying the release on Sound Tribe’s Facebook, “[‘Real & Imagined’ has] always been one of our favorite songs, we just couldn’t seem to finish it. We revisited it after The Universe Inside and something just clicked. The first step in making something real is to imagine it. In other words, our reality is the sum of our collective imagination. We’re more inspired than ever and we hope this song inspires all of you. Let’s imagine something beautiful.”STS9 Announces “Enceladus” Tour In The Fall“Real & Imagined” opens with sparse piano and shimmering electronic effects sampled from Sbtl Hvy’s “Landscape Breath” (as noted by Reddit user timeisart), which then continues to weave its way across the rest of the song. As the laid-back bass and spacious drums kick in, the song settles into an easy groove, never losing sight of the song’s ambient tone. Eventually, the song gears up with the juxtaposition of a plucky guitar riff paired with wispy and eerie electronic ornaments, hinting that the song will easily serve as a jam vehicle in STS9’s live shows for years to come.STS9 Announces Line-Up For Red Rocks Including Axe The Cables And Full ‘Artifact’ ShowGiven that “Real & Imagined” was first conceptualized during the recording sessions for Artifact, fans can hope to see this newly released number at the group’s three-night 20th-anniversary run at the iconic Colorado venue, Red Rocks Amphitheater, in September, which will see the group recreate the entirety of the album on Friday night. Check out Tribe’s new single, “Real & Imagined”, below.last_img read more

first_imgHowever, Rodgers admitted Suarez has gone to another level alongside Messi and Neymar in forming what the Northern Irishman described as one of the deadliest strike forces in football history.“We respect that this is arguably the best team in the world with maybe the best front three of all-time,” Rodgers said at the Camp Nou monday.“I know from working with Luis he used to occupy a four or five-man defence on his own, so if you put Neymar and Messi into that it is a very difficult task.“In this moment in time Luis is the best striker in the world there is no question about that.“I had the pleasure of working with Luis for two years. He is the best in the world. The biggest compliment you can pay him is he came to an already world class team and made them better.“Barca now wouldn’t be the same team without Luis in the team.”Celtic is huge underdog to progress in a group that also contains Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Borussia Moenchengladbach. However, the sides suffered contrasting fortunes at the weekend as Celtic thrashed old rivals Rangers 5-1 in the first league meeting between the two for four years, while Barca slumped to a shock 2-1 home defeat to newly-promoted Alaves. However, Enrique expects a very different clash with Champions League points at stake.“It helps to have played them in pre-season, but in terms of intensity and fighting for the three points there is a huge difference,” added Enrique. And he lauded the impact made by Rodgers in his short time in charge at Celtic in leading the Scottish champions back into the Champions League for the first time in three years.“He loves good football, he is a coach that likes to play on the front foot, to take the game to the opposition and you can see that already in his short time at Celtic.“They have made good signings and have players that will cause us problems. I Like Rodgers as a coach and his idea of how to play football.”Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegram BARCELONA V CELTICCeltic manager Brendan Rodgers monday labelled Barcelona’s Luis Suarez as the best striker in the world ahead of the Scottish champions’ daunting task of stopping him, Lionel Messi and Neymar in their Champions League opener tonight.Rodgers worked with Suarez for two years at Liverpool as the Uruguayan’s 31 goals nearly carried the English side to their first Premier League title in for 24 years in 2014.last_img read more

first_imgArsenal’s manager Unai Emery has a tough job to lift the gloomLondon, United Kingdom | AFP |  Arsenal’s failure to qualify for the Champions League for a third successive season, compounded by an underwhelming transfer window, has left the Gunners facing a turbulent campaign. Here, AFP Sport takes a closer look at the issues that will determine whether Unai Emery’s side can turn the tide:What to expect:Arsenal’s status as huge outsiders to win the Premier League title reflects how far they have fallen in recent years, but the more pertinent question is whether they have lost more ground in the fight to end their Champions League exile.Finishing in the top four proved beyond Emery in his first season at the Emirates Stadium, with a fatal late dip seeing them limp into fifth place, one point behind arch rivals Tottenham.A humiliating 4-1 thrashing against Chelsea in the Europa League final erased their last hope of reaching the Champions League and triggered a summer of recriminations. It is now 15 years since Arsenal last won the Premier League and angry fans have taken to protesting against owner Stan Kroenke amid calls for “better leadership”, threatening to make for a toxic atmosphere at the Emirates unless the Gunners get off to a fast start.Kroenke’s son Josh — a leading figure in Arsenal’s boardroom — insists they will eventually challenge for major honours again and the club record £72 million signing of Lille winger Nicolas Pepe was a welcome statement of intent. But, with Aaron Ramsey moving onto Juventus and a leaky defence still not fixed, Emery still has his work cut out to lift the gloom.New faces:Without the lure of Champions League action to attract big names to north London, Emery had endured a difficult time in the transfer market until the Gunners persuaded Lille to accept their pay-in-instalments offer for Pepe that reportedly spreads the cost of the deal over five years. Ivory Coast star Pepe has the pace and predatory instincts to form a formidable attacking trio with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.Emery’s most intriguing signing before that coup was Dani Ceballos, the Spanish midfielder who arrived on a season-long loan from Real Madrid.Ceballos, 22, struggled to make an impact at Real after initially being ear-marked as a future star. The Gunners also brought in 18-year-old Brazilian forward Gabriel Martinelli for £6 million, a move that bore the stamp of Arsenal’s new technical director Edu, who played for the club during their title-winning ‘Invincibles’ era.Key man:Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finished as the Premier League’s joint top-scorer with 22 goals and the Gabon striker will have to maintain that prolific form if Arsenal are to erase the bitter taste of last season’s swoon.Aubameyang’s flamboyant personality and potent combination of pace and predatory finishing make him one of Arsenal’s few genuine stars. But, despite 31 goals in all competitions, even the 30-year-old wasn’t completely blameless, with some anonymous displays leaving strike partner Alexandre Lacazette isolated and persuading Emery to move him to the flanks at times.Aubameyang was even linked with a summer move to Manchester United amid reports Emery was willing to sacrifice the former Borussia Dortmund player if Arsenal were able to recoup the £56 million they spent to sign him in January 2018.For now, Aubameyang remains a fixture in Emery’s team and getting the best out of him must be top of the manager’s to-do list.Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Tags:#Analysis#web The Hard PartsThat could very well be the kind of sophisticated social network analysis that service providers aspire to in the future and that their customers seek. Identifying some basic opportunities doesn’t mean it will be easy to get there, however. Shekhar and Oliver say this points to the need for “a central role for computation and computational models, not only to scale up to the large and growing data volumes, but also to address new spatiotemporal social questions related to change, trends, duration, mobility, and travel.“The need for computational efficiency conflicts with the requirement for expressive power of the model and balancing these two conflicting goals is challenging.”If each historical moment of our relative connective history becomes no longer exhaust data, but points on a chart, that sure is going to be a challenge in the computational efficiency department! Presumably, it will just be timestamped changes of state that will be preserved.Scaling that analysis is one challenge, finding new ways to recognize, tell and leverage the stories unearthed by analysis of that data is a whole other challenge.Shekhar and Oliver cast themselves into the abyss of that data-centric future with their conclusion: “We welcome collaboration towards identifying datasets and use-cases to evaluate the potential of TAG [the time aggregated graph model] to address spatio-temporal questions about social networks.”Good luck guys, may you help open up this whole new frontier to us all. You’ve certainly articulated something that a whole lot of people are going to be very interested in in the future.Right: A slice of Veronica Belmont’s closest Twitter buds, per Mailana, a system without reference to time. From The Inner Circles of 10 Geek Heroes.Title photo: Blinded by the Light, by Flickr user Jule_Berlin Related Posts marshall kirkpatrick What new things could we discover if social network analysis took time and space into account, in addition to the raw connections between people? In most cases, social network analysis today is limited to discovering friend connections, community leaders and outlines, influential people and personal friend recommendations – in a static or snap-shot kind of way. If new factors could be taken into consideration, specifically changes over time and space, then social network analysis could discover things like emergence or decay of leadership, changes in trust over time, migration and mobility within particular communities online. That’s very valuable information that the social web has barely begun to tackle capturing. That’s the topic of discussion in a new paper by Shashi Shekhar and research assistant Dev Oliver, spatial data scientists at the University of Minnesota, titled Computational Modeling of Spatio-temporal Social Networks: A Time-Aggregated Graph Approach (PDF). The paper was highlighted on the blog GIS and Science today. We’ve excerpted and put in context key points below. The Impact of Space and Time on NetworkingSpace and time are big factors in determining the diverse friend connections that different people form. Or, as Shekhar and Oliver put it, “Spatio-temporal constraints (e.g., geographic space, travel, schedules and diurnal [daily] cycles) play a major role in determining baseline homophily due to reasons like opportunity and minimization of cost and effort.”In other words, if we don’t pay attention to the way space and time factor into our lives, if we just see who knows whom and who chatters about what, then we’ll have a very blunt understanding of the world. Diurnal cycle in, and diurnal cycle out (!) businesses and software users seem likely to call for more clarity than that in the future.Consider the diagram below, for example, from Shekhar and Oliver’s paper. It might look a little intimidating, but if you follow it step by step from left to right, it’s not. Today we might look at a group of four participants in some network and just see the final timeframe of connections (t10). You can see who knows who and who doesn’t know who. But imagine if time were taken into consideration as it is here. You can see how this particular mini-network unfolded from the first connections, through the end-point. That’s a much richer understanding of this group.Look at poor little Node 3, for example, in the bottom of the square. It took them longer to go from Visitor to Friend than it took anyone else, in each of the relationships Node 3 formed. Node 2 at the top, on the other hand, looks friendly and effective at building strong relationships quickly.Social network analysis services see these differences in the way people interact already and they see the way changes in spacial relations impact them, but it’s a very nascent field.“We see the spatio-temporal effect manifest in Twitalyzer data during conferences, tradeshows, and live events (e.g., SXSW),” says Eric Peterson, creator of professional Twitter analysis service Twitalyzer. “The results are pretty obvious in our data: individuals who exhibit an otherwise ‘normal’ level of Impact, Influence, and Engagement in our data go ‘off the charts.’ “The simplest explanation is that there is a compressing effect on an individual’s network when they are more spatially proximate (e.g., can grab a drink and interact face to face.) When this happens, especially when it happens over a short period of time, people’s scores change, their networks expand (typically, although we have seen contraction), and their ‘chatter’ (in your words) becomes more focused.”As Yet Unanswered Time-based Questions of Value for Any CommunityHow is trust or leadership changing over time?Who are the emerging leaders in a group? What are the recurring changes in a group? How long is the tenure of a leader in a group? How long does it take to elevate the level of trust such as a relationship changing from visitor to friend? Now imagine that kind of temporal and spacial analysis being performed on much larger networks, over greater periods of time. “This added dimension or set of data points is out there and generally widely available as ‘exhaust data’, so to harness it and factor it in with the rest of the social graph would be truly valuable,” says Eileen Burbidge, a London angel investor at White Bear Yard and a former product manager at Skype, among other positions.“From an investment (i.e. value creation) point of view, spatio-temporal data has the potential to add an element of value, context and relevance to otherwise ‘flat’ data points.“Take LinkedIn for example. I use it to see who in my network knows (and might endorse) whom, but I’m often cross-referencing/checking a person’s contacts by their work history to discern if a specific contact was established at one spatio-temporal point vs another (ie relevancy)… The ability to build this into social network analysis would be extremely valuable as space and time offer tremendous context and relevance to social connections and relationships. “ Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

first_imgPremiere Pro is actually an extremely capable audio recording studio, allowing you to record onto as many tracks as you like.  Here’s what you need to know to get started.Ever needed to record a quick voiceover for your video editing projects?  Like other non-linear video editing applications, Premiere Pro makes it easy to record audio directly into the application. The first thing you need to do to get your audio to record into Première Pro is to visit your preferences and make sure that you have the appropriate inputs and outputs setup. When in your Preferences go to the ‘Audio’ tab …Audio PreferencesPreference ChoicesAs you can see from the image above, I have all three boxes checked including the ‘Mute input during timeline recording’. I have this checked to ensure that when I’m recording audio in Premiere it isn’t fed back out of my speakers causing a feedback problem. It can get quite wearing on longer projects to continuously have the audio playing when scrubbing to a new part of the timeline. The advantage of being able to turn this off using “Play audio while scrubbing” is that you don’t then need to mute the audio channels – which can cause you a problem later if you forget to turn them back on again before outputting your project!Next, go to the ‘Audio Hardware’ tab. This tab will look different depending if you’re using Premiere on a PC or a Mac.  Essentially it’s about making sure you have the correct input and outputs available from your system. Below I’ll show you the PC options but for more details and  if unsure what to do if on a Mac check out this help page from Adobe.Audio Hardware Settings (PC) with the ASIO Button ClickedAs you can see, on a PC I have options to look at both the Input and the Output tabs to make sure I’ve selected whatever may be attached to my system.Usually, the default settings will work fine. However, it is important to complete this step because if you don’t you won’t be able to select the appropriate input when it come to recording. Now we need to turn our attention to Premiere’s ‘Audio Mixer Panel’ to set up ready to record. As stated above, one of the really nice features of Premiere Pro is that you can record narration while watching the timeline playback – just as long as you’ve set your system up correctly first. In the mixer panel you will see three little buttons under the panning dial and the drop-down saying ‘Read’. These are M = Mute this channel, S = Solo this channel & R = Set this channel ready to record.Three Little ButtonsWhen you hit the R button a new drop-down will appear at the top of the channel as shown below.New Drop-down Showing Recording Device OptionsIf you have more than one audio device enabled on your system then you will need to select the device you wish to use for this recording. If only one device is enabled, then that device will be the one Premiere Pro assumes you wish to use.Next, you need to click the red ‘Record’ button which sets Premiere Pro up to record on any tracks that have the ‘R’ button selected and a recording device selected. However, this will not start the actual recording yet …Select the Record Button to Prepare for RecordingTo start the actual recording, all you now need to do is hit the spacebar!  However, don’t be alarmed if you see the play-head moving but no waveform being created in the timeline. The waveform will appear when you stop recording by hitting the spacebar once again.Audio Recorded Into the TimelineAt this point it may be wise to give a couple of words of warning when recording audio into a Premiere Pro timeline.First, don’t hit the spacebar to stop recording until you’ve given Premiere Pro a moment to process the audio it has just recorded. It is bad practice to stop recording as soon as you finish any recording anyway, but in this instance, if you stop too quickly after finishing speaking Premiere Pro may actually cut off the end of what you’re saying (as you will not have given it enough time to process the audio).  Always give it a beat or two so that it can process everything.Second, always do a test first and and make sure that when you record your speech that you are creating a waveform that is large enough to give a good ‘signal-to-noise’ ratio (i.e. the signal is much larger than the noise of the computer so that you can easily get rid of any noise at a later date if needed).  Also ensure that it isn’t distorting by being too loud!  You can always see if something is too loud by either looking in the timeline and see the top and/or the bottom of the waveform peaking or flattening off.  You can also play back what you have recorded and look at it in the Audio Mixer Panel to see if it ‘peaks’ into the red part of the Audio Mixer as shown below.Good Signal-to-noise Waveform & Distorted WaveformDistorting Waveform in Audio MixerIf the recording level is too high and you are getting a distorted (squared off) waveform as shown above, then go back to your Audio Mixer Panel and pull down the slider for the channel you’re recording on and do another test. Keep pulling down the slider until you no longer get any distortion but still manage to get a ‘healthy’ looking waveform where the audio you’re recording is much louder than any background noise.Once you’ve recorded audio into Premiere Pro it’s time start thinking about your mix, and possibly bringing your project into Adobe Audition for additional audio work.last_img read more

first_imgThe Enforcement Directorate has filed a chargesheet against two persons allegedly liked to terror outfit Al Badr on charges of money laundering. The chargesheet has been filed against Khurshid Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Srinagar, and Inayatullah Shah, a resident of Baramulla, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).The case pertains to an FIR lodged by the J&K police against the accused persons in 2009. It was alleged that the police seized from them ₹50,000 in cash, a live Chinese grenade and some documents, including a letter of “Al Badr Mujahideen J&K”. The letter contained a message that the money and the other articles were being sent through the two alleged conduits.‘Documents forged’During interrogation, the accused initially said the money came from the sale of fruits, for which Mr. Bhat had made forged documents. “ED investigation has established that the seized amount of ₹50,000 was proceeds of crime, derived and obtained, directly or indirectly, by Khursheed Ahmed Bhat and Anayatullah Shah as a result of criminal activity relating to the scheduled offence of PMLA. Hence it was provisionally attached. It was confirmed by the adjudicating authority on June 16,” said an official.Based on findings, the agency has sought the trial of the two accused by the Special Court in Srinagar.last_img read more

first_imgPolice stand guard at the scene of a suspected terrorist attack during a pop concert by US star Ariana Grande in Manchester, northwest England on May 23, 2017. AFPTwenty-two people, including children, were killed and dozens injured when a man detonated a bomb at a pop concert by US star Ariana Grande, in Britain’s deadliest terror attack in 12 years.Screaming fans, many of them teens, fled the venue in panic after the bomb blast at the end of the concert in the northern English city of Manchester on Monday evening.”There was heat on my neck and when I looked up there were bodies everywhere”, Elena Semino, who was waiting for her 17-year-old daughter, told the Guardian newspaper.Semino, who was herself injured, said she had been standing by the ticket office of the 21,000-capacity indoor Manchester Arena when the explosion went off.”A huge bomb-like bang went off that hugely panicked everyone and we were all trying to flee the arena”, said Majid Khan, 22, who was at the show with his sister.Ambulances and bomb disposal teams rushed to the venue, as family members frantically searched for their loved ones, and residents opened their doors to stranded concert-goers after trains were cancelled. There were children among the 22 killed in the attack, while 59 people were injured, Greater Manchester Police chief Ian Hopkins said early Tuesday.British Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the “appalling terrorist attack” and suspended her campaign ahead of a general election on June 8 along with chief opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn.”All our thoughts are with the victims and the families of those who have been affected,” said May, who was due to chair an emergency ministerial meeting at around 0800 GMT on Tuesday.Grande, who was due to give a concert in London later on Tuesday, said she was “broken” in a tweet.”Broken. From the bottom of my heart, I am so, so sorry. I don’t have words,” wrote the 23-year-old, who is popular with teens and pre-teens.The attack was the deadliest in Britain since July 7, 2005 when four suicide bombers inspired by Al-Qaeda attacked London’s transport system during rush hour, killing 52 people and wounding 700 more. The Manchester blast recalled the November 2015 attack at the Bataclan concert hall in Paris in which armed men wearing explosive belts stormed in and killed 90 people. That attack was claimed by the Islamic State jihadist group.’A massive flash’Police were called to the scene at the Manchester Arena concert and sports venue at 2133 GMT.Manchester Arena said the blast “took place outside the venue in a public space”, while police said it was “within the foyer area of the stadium.”The foyer connects the auditorium with Victoria train and tram station, a major transport hub on the northern edge of the city centre. One witness, Gary Walker, told BBC Radio 5 Live he was hit by shrapnel in his foot and his wife sustained a stomach wound as they waited for their daughters.”We heard the last song go and then suddenly there was a massive flash and then a bang and smoke,” he said.Isabel Hodgins, an actress who had been at the concert, told Sky News: “Everybody was panicking, there was pushing up the stairs.”The corridor was full, it smelled of burning, there was quite a lot of smoke as we were leaving.”It’s just shocking and we just feel very shaken up. We’re just lucky to have gotten away safely,” she said.Calvin Welsford, 18, from Bristol told the BBC: “It almost sounded like a gunshot”.”I looked around and people were just spilling down, heading out of the building”.”I was actually having an asthma attack. It was sheer panic,” he said.US ‘ready to assist’Hopkins said investigators were “working closely with the national counter terrorism policing network and UK intelligence partners”.The US Department of Homeland Security, Britain’s biggest intelligence partner, said it was “closely monitoring” the situation.”We are working with our foreign counterparts to obtain additional information about the cause of the reported explosion as well as the extent of injuries and fatalities,” the department said in a statement.Tributes poured in for Manchester from around the world.Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canadians were “shocked by the news of the horrific attack,” while EU president Donald Tusk wrote: “My heart is in Manchester this night.”French President Emmanuel Macron said he was “horrified” by the attack.Pop world ralliesThe pop world also rallied, with Katy Perry tweeting: “Praying for everyone at Ariana Grande’s show”.US pop princess Taylor Swift, a friend of Grande, wrote: “My thoughts, prayers and tears for all those affected by the Manchester tragedy tonight”.In Manchester, residents tweeted with the hashtag #RoomforManchester to offer a place to stay and there were reports of taxis taking passengers for free.”We have a spare double bed and two sofas available if anybody needs a place tonight,” tweeted @iamjesyrae.Concerned relatives used the hashtag #MissinginManchester to locate loved ones.Train services to and from Manchester Victoria Station — located under the Arena — were cancelled.”Disruption is expected to continue until the end of the day,” National Rail said in a statement.Read more:19 killed in UK terror attacklast_img read more
