Cody Bellinger homer gives Dodgers their first walkoff win of season Dodgers hit seven home runs, sweep Colorado Rockies How Dodgers pitcher Ross Stripling topped the baseball podcast empire Lux was not a candidate for the move, Roberts said, nor will he likely be added to the taxi squad at any point this season. By Friday, there will no longer be enough days left in the 2020 season for Lux to gain a full year of pro-rated service time, thus delaying his potential free agency — assuming there aren’t major changes in the Collective Bargaining Agreement which will expire following the 2021 season.“To potentially bring Gavin up for a day doesn’t make any sense at all,” Roberts said. “We’ve also told Gavin if there’s a situation like that with the taxi, he probably won’t be the guy and he won’t be here until he is a guy potentially playing every day. That’s kind of the thought behind it. So we’re happy that Gavin has continued to get better. He’s handling everything like a professional. All the reports are good, but we’re excited for Zach to get that day one of service.”FULL COMPLIANCEKenley Jansen is one of three Dodgers who have acknowledged they suffered from COVID-19 before reporting to the team in July. Like A.J. Pollock and Scott Alexander, Jansen described experiencing “a terrible headache” along with chills and body aches.Jansen said he is still building his body back up from the illness and realizes he might not be back to full strength for some time now. He also said he is taking every precaution because doctors cannot assure him that having the illness once makes him immune to another coronavirus infection.“No doctors know what’s going on right now. That’s the thing,” he said. “It’s a pandemic right now. They’re all trying to figure things out. So even though I got it, you don’t know if you’re gonna get infected again. So I’m not gonna take that for granted, like ‘Oh, I got it already. I’m good.’ No, I’m gonna act like I never had it.“But because of my experience, I can tell everybody to just take it very serious because … it could spread very quick. You see it on Miami. We see it on the Cardinals. So, this thing is hard. It just takes one person to get it and we just don’t know and it could spread that quick.”MOOKIE STATUSRelated Articles “Just go back to our five-year history here,” he said. “I think all of our demonstrated behavior in the last five years is to do anything and everything to win baseball games. So we’re going to do whatever we feel like puts us in the best position to win.”Lux hit .240 in 23 September games with the Dodgers last season and went 2 for 9 in the postseason. Now Lux is back in school, part of the Dodgers’ 60-player pool in this odd season, working out at their alternate training site at USC as the season has begun. But Dodgers manager Dave Roberts once again denied any agenda in the handling of Lux other than putting together the most effective roster.“First of all, there is no conspiracy theory with holding Gavin Lux down for any other reason aside from we don’t feel he’s ready right now,” Roberts said. “And we let Gavin know that. So that should be put to bed. I think that it was a short ramp up for Gavin and he wasn’t right mechanically. He knows that. We know that. He’s still getting there at ‘SC. He’s getting at-bats daily. It’s coming. I see video every single day. It’s still not there yet. But it’s getting considerably better.”Lux was one of several Dodgers who arrived at Summer Camp late. Unlike others, he would not discuss the reasons for his late arrival. The Dodgers moved utility man Zach McKinstry from the taxi squad to their active roster Wednesday (optioning left-hander Victor Gonzalez) as protection with Edwin Rios nursing an injured foot (he was hit by a pitch Tuesday). With rosters dropping from 30 to 28 on Thursday, McKinstry is likely to be optioned back after one game. Dodgers’ Max Muncy trying to work his way out of slow start
Fire danger is on Dave Roberts’ mind as Dodgers head to San Francisco Mookie Betts (injured finger) was not in the lineup again Wednesday. With the Dodgers off Thursday, he will have had four days to rest and treat the injury (though he did play two innings on defense Tuesday) before the Dodgers open a homestand against the Giants on Friday.Roberts said Betts was expected to go through “his regular routine” during the Dodgers’ pregame workout Wednesday, though he didn’t know if he would take batting practice. The target is for Betts to return to the lineup on Friday.“That’s the hope. But I’m not certain,” Roberts said. “The hope is, yeah, to get him back in there (Friday). But if it doesn’t happen then we’ll adjust.” The reigning Minor League Player of the Year, as determined by Baseball America, the Dodgers’ Gavin Lux came into spring training seen by many as a strong candidate to not only be the their primary second baseman, but also to make a run at the franchise’s 19th National League Rookie of the Year award. As camp progressed, however, it became apparent the Dodgers did not see Lux as a lock to open the season on their roster, and that raised questions about service-time manipulation — a frequent maneuver franchises have used to delay the eventual arrival of free agency for top prospects. The Chicago Cubs did it so blatantly with Kris Bryant in 2015 that Bryant filed a grievance. An arbitrator eventually ruled in the Cubs’ favor.“I don’t know why we’re being asked that,” Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said in March when he was, indeed, asked about it.Friedman acknowledged the potential benefit of delaying service time “but any of those things are not primary factors for us, as demonstrated with our past.” He pointed to the way the Dodgers aggressively promoted young players like Cody Bellinger, Walker Buehler and Will Smith in recent years.
